The Argo Group Gold Cup is the final curtain, the seventh stage of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour, in which the teams compete for the ISAF Match Racing World Championship. Match racing for The King Edward VII Gold Cup is considered as one of the classic heritage events on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour.
The 2012 Argo Group Gold Cup began October 6th and ended with the Finals on October 11th. Spectator friendly racing was held in Hamilton Harbour, adjacent to the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Marina, a spectacular attraction for tourists and Bermuda residents alike. This year marked the 67th staging of the King Edward VII Gold Cup, with previous winners and some of the greatest names ever to match race like Reuben Corbett (ISAF -15), Adam Minoprio (248), Taylor Canfiel (ISAF -2), Ian Williams (ISAF – 1), Bjorn Hansen (ISAF- 4).
Minoprio’s BlackMatch team from New Zealand defeated Keith Swinton’s Black Swan Racing from Australia, 3-2, in the final of the Gold Cup.
Minoprio and crew of Nick Blackmon, Andrew Burgess and Tom Powrie won $35,000 from $100,000 prize purse. Swinton and crew Ted Hackney, Henry Kernot and Björn Lundgren won $16,000.
Minoprio has previously finished runner-up twice (2008, ’09) and this time he had to work hard for the victory. Windmark setup by the southern shore in the Hamilton Harbour did create challenging situation for the teams to win.
The final event is the Monsoon Cup Malaysia, scheduled for late January 2016. Based on the final results, Hansen, Canfield and Ian Williams, the overall tour leader who placed seventh in the Argo Group Gold Cup, are going to have the best shot at winning the ISAF Match Racing World Championship. The three skippers are separated by just 5 points.
