ABOUT THE HOTEL

126 Somerset Road, Somerset Village, MA 06, Bermuda

Many visitors are excited to return to the Willowbank Resort after it re-opened in April 2018 with 65 rooms on the property. Long time visitors returned because of its unbeatable location on the West End of the island and the independence it offers guests. It’s a tremendous value compared to many of the beachfront hotels in Bermuda and has some of the best ocean views on the entire island, including an amazing sunset. Some of the resort’s highlights include two private beaches with rocks & coves for snorkeling, a walkout deck to observe the breathtaking sunsets, located on a secluded and private part of the island, all at incredibly reasonable prices.

NEARBY BEACHES

Beaches Near to Willowbank Resort
Daniel’s Head Beach

0.8 miles/ 1.3 kilometers | This peninsula actually features nine beaches, all with calm, shallow water. You will have not only the beaches along the shoreline to snorkel, but if you are careful and cross the channel (be careful! as fast boats come through here), you will be able to snorkel around Daniel’s Head island. There is also a shipwreck, the Vixen, on the opposite side of the island. Again though, be careful as currents can be strong here and it can be a far swim, so only experienced snorkelers and swimmers here.

Somerset Long Bay

1.0 miles/ 1.6 kilometers | This long stretch of sand leads to clear water that remains shallow for a number of yards from shore, making it a great match for snorkelers. The large park is good for sports as well. You may see a turtle off the beach, but you’ll certainly see fish along the shoreline. The adjoining nature preserve is a great place to spot migratory birds, but really can only be walked around the outside, as the center is like a marshland with a small area of water in the middle.

Hog Bay, Bermuda

1.2 miles/ 2.0 kilometers | This really is more of an adventure than a beach. The beach is tiny, but the journey through Hog Bay Park is fun. Reach this well-kept secret through a rocky, wooded trail from the car park in Hog Bay Park to the shoreline. A true gem for snorkeling and swimming, Hog Bay Beach is also a destination for seashells and turtles that are attracted to the sea grass in the area close to the shore. Check out the rock pools to see crabs and other small fish trapped with the tides.

Black Bay Beach

2.7 miles/ 4.3 kilometers | Three tiny beaches small grassy area off the road out of Dockyard with one of the beaches having sea glass – be sure to come and see, but don’t take. Enjoy the sunsets from the various benches and picnic tables off this beach and along the coast as you head out of Dockyard. It is a nice place to walk and explore.

Whale Bay

3.0 miles/ 4.8 kilometers | Visit in March or April to spot schools of migrating humpback whales offshore. However, even if you miss the migration season, Whale Bay is a top destination for wildlife observation. During low tide, the coral reefs and the beautiful fish inhabiting them are easily accessible from the shore for snorkelers. Since this beach isn’t monitored by a lifeguard, be careful and always go out in partners. You can also visit the fort on top of the hill for an added adventure. Find Whale Bay Road across the street from the bus stop on Middle Road and take a 10-minute walk towards the very end of that road and the beach is the far back right of the field/park.

Snorkel Park

4.0 miles/ 6.4 kilometers | Snorkel Park sits on the outside wall of the Royal Naval Dockyard’s 30′ fortress walls. The crystal clear water surrounding the walls of the fort to the right and the coastline to the left are teaming with life. There are shallow reefs where you’ll find colorful fish. After snorkeling, check out the beach bar and restaurant or rent water sports equipment for an active day on the beach, including jet skis. Live music and family-friendly events are frequent Sunday occurrences, and the Club Aqua nightclub takes over a few nights a week with drinks and dancing for adults only turning into one of Bermuda’s best night clubs.

Church Bay

4.0 miles/ 6.5 kilometers | One of the best beaches on the island to snorkel from, due to the coral reef being so close to the beach, which is surrounded by picturesque cliffs. A secluded place to unwind. But be careful snorkeling here, as there are no lifeguards and riptides can take you far out from which you’ll need to escape from. See more about how to get out of a rip tide here. Avoid snorkeling during south or southwest winds due to strong currents on the South Shore. Check the local weather forecast for up to date information.
